HERBIE FULLY LOADED
In order to bring Herbie to life, visual effects supervisor John Van Vliet called in Short to oversee the mechanical Herbie’s performance. Working with special effects supervisor Matt Sweeney’s team of technicians he supervised and choreographed the character’s action along side the films stars Lindsay Lohan and Justin Long.

E.T. 20TH ANNIVERSARY With the release of the 20th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T. the extraterrestrial Short was brought in by visual effects supervisor Bill George to help reinvent E.T’s heartlight. Because Short designed and created the heartlight for the original film it was only natural for ILM to enlist his aid in creating a CGI version of the famous organ for the new improved enhanced version of the film.

BEETLEJUICE One of the last films to be made without the benefit of CGI, Beetlejuice stretched the boundaries of imagination and technique to it’s limits. The film is filled with real time first generation visual effects, most without the use of opticals. Beetlejuice’s strange lands and even stranger characters was a tour de force for vfx supervisor Alan Munro and creature fx designer/supervisor Short. Some the films challenges resulted in the first use of airbrushing to apply make-up for films as well as an Oscar© for Short and the make-up team.

PREDATOR While the film was still titled “Hunter” Robert Short Productions was brought in to re conceptualize the alien monster. At first RSPinc. put armor on the existing lizard-like creature, played by stuntman Jean Claude Van Damme, but this was soon scrapped. Under director John Mctiernan’s supervision Short’s team developed a new direction for the creature by creating an upright Masai warrior design complete with armor, dread locks and side mounted mandibles. After Short moved onto other projects the design was eventually used as the bases for the final creature.

SPLASH Designed and created by Short, Splash’s classic mermaid design is recognized by movie audiences world wide. From the stunning bronze skin tones to her lyrical golden tail Darryl Hannah will forever be linked to Short’s design as “Madison” the mermaid from Splash. The challenge was not only to create something beautiful but also practical which the actress could swim in at 35 feet below sea level and still look at ease. This was accomplished using a new never-before-used material called Skin-Flex, which became an industry standard. Short, along with visual effects supervisor Mitch Suskin, designed the graceful mermaid transformation sequences.
